The major competition, basically home and away depending on number of teams. There were matches of the day Saturday at SCG and Sunday at SSG until 1973. Final series with four to ten finalists. Currently top eight with McIntyre system.

The six teams that did not qualify for the premiership finals played each other, then the three winners plus the team eliminated in the minor premiership semifinal played each other, then the two winners played each other. The remaining team joined the other three premiership finalists in the semifinals.
